Make Your Nissan NV Stand Out

by Noah Joseph, AutoBlog

There’s no limit to what a versatile commercial van can be used for, from shuttling travelers to and from the airport to delivering all manner of goods and services. In many cities that includes food trucks, which have rapidly been growing in popularity especially in Los Angeles. To demonstrate that versatility, Nissan is bringing a pair of food trucks to the LA Auto Show where hacks like us – at least, the lactose-tolerant among us – will be treated to grilled cheese and ice cream sandwiches. The foodstuffs are being provided by The Grilled Cheese Truck and the Coohlaus truck, two of LA’s most popular mobile eateries, which have each found their way into a new Nissan NV2500 High Roof van.

Pine Belt 2012 Nissan Murano – At A Glance

2012 Nissan Murano Combines Distinctive Styling, “Mobile Site” Interior and Advanced Technology Features

The Murano, Nissan’s premium crafted crossover, continues in 2012 as one of the most distinctively styled vehicles in its class – both inside and out. It combines a luxurious “mobile suite” interior with advanced technology and a refined, premium driving feel to create a modern crossover SUV like no other.

After receiving a number of significant enhancements in 2011, including a revised exterior design and the addition of the SV model, enhancements for 2012 include the addition of a new Platinum Edition with new 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, Nissan Navigation System and exclusive Sapphire Black exterior color. Murano S models add a 7-inch monochrome screen and one new exterior color, Pearl White, is also added.

The 2012 Nissan Murano is available in eight models: Murano S FWD, Murano S AWD, Murano SV FWD, Murano SV AWD, Murano SL FWD, Murano SL AWD, Murano LE FWD and Murano LE AWD. Murano is also offered in an innovative all-wheel drive convertible model, the 2012 Murano CrossCabriolet (for complete information go to NissanNews.com).

All 2012 Muranos feature a powerful yet fuel-efficient 260-horsepower VQ-series 3.5-liter DOHC V6 and an advanced Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission) – a combination that provides a sporty and smooth driving experience. Murano is available in front-wheel drive or with an Intuitive All-Wheel Drive system, and all Muranos come with standard Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and Traction Control System (TCS).

Crafted, Dramatic Murano Styling
Murano’s sculpted exterior features a wide front end with a dynamic front fascia design and wide grille. Murano is again available with quad-cylinder style High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional Xenon projector headlights and standard fog lights on SV, SL and LE models.

The wide hood sweeps into the sculpted, dynamic bodylines, with pronounced wheel arches and standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels (S, SV, SL) or 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels (LE and Platinum Edition) providing an aggressive stance. Large chrome door handles and available roof rails (standard on SV, SL, LE) add both functionality and visual accents. Murano’s equally distinctive rear end features a unique rear glass shape, integrated rear roof spoiler and large rear LED taillights that accents the body side character lines. Dual exhaust outlets with chrome finishers provide an appropriate final accent.

Other available exterior features include rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power liftgate and a large, dual panel power sliding glass moonroof with 2nd row skylight that provides an open-air experience for Murano passengers without compromising headroom. Eight exterior colors are offered, including new Sapphire Black (exclusive to Platinum Edition) and Pearl White, as well as previously available Merlot, Tinted Bronze, Brilliant Silver, Platinum Graphite, Super Black and Graphite Blue.

A Comfortable “Mobile Suite” Interior

Inside the stylish Murano body is an advanced “mobile suite” interior, embodying warmth and modern style. From the sweep of the instrument panel to the wide console and ambient lighting, Murano owners feel a sense of warmth and security from the first time they open the doors. Murano’s front seats have been designed for enhanced support, offering a rich, supple feel and excellent riding comfort. The 60/40 fold-flat rear seat is available with a convenient power return feature (the seat returns to the upright position with the touch of a button), while heated seats are available for both front and rear passengers.

Also offered are double-stitched leather-appointed seating surfaces (standard on SL and LE models) for an inviting, luxurious feeling, available 8-way power driver’s and 4-way power front passenger’s seats and a driver’s memory system (seats, steering wheel and mirrors). Two interior colors are offered: Beige and Black.

The 2012 Murano also offers a variety of convenient cargo storage areas throughout the interior, including standard dual-level center console, pockets for mobile phones, coins, maps and more, numerous cupholders, an extra large glove compartment, and dual seatback pockets, as well as a large rear cargo area.

Other standard interior features include an auto door lock feature, dual zone climate controls, Fine Vision gauges, and an AM/FM/CD6/six-speaker audio system with AUX-in jack and MP3/WMA capability.

Murano’s long list of available advanced technology features include standard Nissan Intelligent Key™ with Push Button Start, standard Interface System for iPod®, a Bose® premium 11-speaker audio system with an in-dash CD changer, Radio Data System (RDS), and speed-sensitive volume control; and available XM® Satellite Radio (XM® subscription required, sold separately) and Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System. The Nissan Hard Drive Navigation System includes a user-friendly graphic interface, menu structure and intelligent search capabilities, XM NavTraffic® Real-Time Traffic Information, XM NavWeather™ (XM® subscription required, sold separately) and Zagat® Restaurant Survey.

Also available is an iPod® connector that integrates into the Murano’s standard audio system controls (SV, SL and LE), steering wheel controls for cruise control and audio system, and Voice Recognition for audio, Bluetooth® and navigation system.

Murano again offers a long list of standard safety features, with six standard air bags, including a Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt sensors and an occupant classification sensor, roof-mounted curtain supplemental side-impact air bags for front-and rear-seat occupant head protection, along with a standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and driver/passenger seat belt warning lamps. Also standard are front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters, LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child seat anchors and tether system, front seats with active head restraints and Zone Body Construction with front and rear crumple zones to help dissipate crash energy away from the passenger compartment.

Responsive Power and Control
All 2012 Muranos feature a 3.5-liter DOHC V6 with 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque, part of Nissan’s award-winning VQ engine series. The engine incorporates a Twin Nissan Variable Induction Control System (NICS), microfinished camshaft and crankshaft surfaces, DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coated valve lifters, resin intake manifold, forged crankshaft, digital knock control system, high capacity muffler and lightweight aluminum block and cylinder heads.

Engine power is transferred to an advanced Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission) with Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) that provides a sporty driving experience and the smoothness that only a CVT offers.

Murano is available in front-wheel drive or with an advanced all-wheel drive system that automatically adjusts to road conditions. The intuitive all-wheel drive system connects the Murano VDC system’s yaw sensors, wheel slip sensors and steering angle sensors with the AWD system. The system helps provide increased traction in a variety of driving conditions by distributing engine torque depending on the driver’s steered direction and the actual direction of the vehicle. Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with a Traction Control System (TCS) is again standard on all Murano models.

Nissan’s advanced “D” platform provides a solid foundation for family adventure-style crossover duties. This platform, which is similar to that used in the 2011 Altima, has been optimized for Murano. Every Murano offers a standard four-wheel independent suspension with extensive use of lightweight aluminum for a reduction in sprung weight. The suspension design features cradle-type front subframe and multi-link rear design with improved geometry and large front and rear stabilizer bars, provides increased stiffness. The suspension, in combination with high performance dual flow path shock absorbers, helps provide sure footing and increased ride comfort on rough surfaces.

A twin-orifice speed-sensitive power steering system provides the proper levels of assistance in both around-town and high-speed driving. The system provides a direct steering feel, inspiring driver confidence. Braking is provided by large 4-wheel vented disc brakes (12.6-inch front, 12.1-inch rear) with 4-wheel, 4-channel, 4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). Murano S, SV and SL models are equipped with 18×7.5-inch 6-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels with P235/65R18 tires, while 20×7.5-inch 5-spoke aluminum-alloy wheels with P235/55R20 tires come standard on Murano LE models. Exclusive 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels are offered with the new Platinum Edition.

Eight Well-Equipped Models
The 2012 Nissan Murano is available in eight models – S FWD, S AWD, SV FWD, SV AWD, SL FWD, SL AWD, LE FWD and LE AWD. All Murano AWD models (S, SV, SL, LE) include an advanced all-wheel drive system.

Murano S models include the 3.5-liter 260-horsepower V6; Xtronic CVT, 18-inch alloy wheels, halogen headlights and LED taillights, 6-way manual driver’s and 4-way manual passenger’s seats, manual tilt/telescoping steering wheel, power windows and door locks with remote keyless entry system, a 6-speaker audio system, Nissan Intelligent Key™ with Push Button Start, rear privacy glass and more.

Murano SV models add Dual Panel Moonroof with one-touch open/close, auto reverse, sliding shade and privacy glass, roof rails, integrated halogen front fog lights, 8-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, Interface System for iPod®, RearView Monitor, Vehicle Security System, and XM® Satellite Radio (XM® subscription required, sold separately).

Murano LE models add 20-inch wheels with a special titanium-colored finish, roof rails with silver accents, HID bi-functional Xenon projector headlights, heated rear seats; power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, wood grain interior trim, and steering wheel memory position.

Only two option packages are available for the 2012 Murano: the Navigation Package, with HDD Navigation, Voice Recognition, touch screen with 7-inch VGA screen and Bluetooth® Streaming Audio; and the new Platinum Edition with HDD Navigation, new 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, exclusive Sapphire Black exterior color and Platinum Edition badging.

2012 Pine Belt Nissan Maxima

2012 Nissan Maxima Features Refreshed Exterior, New Limited Edition Package

The flagship Nissan Maxima continues to set the bar for Nissan sedans, combining breakthrough sports sedan styling, a driver-oriented cockpit, ample comfort and luxury for passengers and an advanced drivetrain anchored by Nissan’s legendary VQ-series V6 engine. For 2012, the iconic Maxima receives a refreshed exterior – with a new front grille design, new rear combination lights, and new 18-inch and 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Inside, the roomy Maxima interior’s enhancements include a new meter cluster illumination color (white), new Dark Piano-hairline trim, a new Atlantic Cherry wood tone trim and a new Cafe Latte interior color. There’s also a new audio segment display and new audio/HVAC knob design. Two new exterior colors are offered for 2012: Java Metallic and Dark Slate.

The other big news for the 2012 Maxima is the addition of a special Limited Edition Package, which offers smoked appearance headlights, High Intensity Discharge (HID) Xenon headlights, a compass in the rearview mirror, 18-inch aluminum-alloy Dark Hyper Silver colored wheels, a rear spoiler, dark satin chrome front grille, fog lights, outside mirrors with integrated turn signals and metallic trim on the center cluster, center console and door armrest grips.

The 2012 Maxima is offered in two well-equipped models – Maxima 3.5 S and Maxima 3.5 SV, each featuring a standard 290-horsepower 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve VQ-series V6 engine and Xtronic CVT® with manual and “Ds” (drive sport) modes and available paddle shifters.

A Dynamic Presence, A Luxurious Interior
On the road or standing still, Maxima offers a dynamic presence that distinguishes it from other mid-size sedans. Maxima’s exterior is highlighted by the flow of its powerful and beautiful surfaces, like the undulation of a wave. The look starts with Maxima’s aggressive stance and powerful fender volume.

This deeply sculpted body/fender treatment is seldom used for mass market vehicles because of the engineering and manufacturing complexity required to physically accomplish it.

Maxima’s aggressive performance stance is created by its sporty proportions that carefully balance wheelbase and overall length, along with a wide front and rear track. The look is accented by 18-inch and available 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels – with new designs for 2012 – and low-profile performance tires.

Maxima’s exterior also imparts a strong premium presence. The large, wraparound L-shaped headlights add a unique dimension to the overall design, while the light surrounds suggest a powerful “turbine” appearance of energy and strength. The upturned headlight shape combines with a new grille design, large bumper opening and bulging “catamaran-style” hood to give Maxima a formidable expression, setting the tone for the rest of the vehicle. Smoke-colored High Intensity Discharge (HID) Xenon headlights and a dark chrome grille finish are available with the optional Sport Package and new Limited Edition Package.

The powerful Maxima form continues along its profile, with careful layering of the bumper, hood and fender parting lines. The polished, elegant motion spreads from the deep-waisted rear fenders through distinctive Maxima-style C-pillars and high trunk lid. At the rear, Maxima features a 12-LED L-shaped taillight design, with a pair of side marker bulbs for added visibility during night driving. The rear combination taillight design has been refreshed for 2012.

Another unique styling feature is the available Dual Panel Moonroof, which combines a front section that moves like a normal moonroof (positioned farther forward than typical) and a fixed translucent rear section that provides light to rear seat passengers. The overall design gives the appearance that the entire roof is composed of black glass. The Dual Panel Moonroof includes dual power sunshades for both the front and rear glass sections, adding a level of convenience. It is offered as part of the Premium Package.

Maxima is available in a choice of nine exterior colors, including new Java Metallic and Dark Slate and carryover Crimson Black, Brilliant Silver, Super Black, Tuscan Sun, Winter Frost, Navy Blue and Ocean Gray.

Maxima’s interior design provides the feeling of a sports car with controls ergonomically close, yet with ample roominess and comfort for both driver and passengers. The instrument panel features “Daytime Illumination” electroluminescent meters with a new illumination color (white) for 2012. The tachometer is rotated so the engine redline is placed at the 12 o’clock position, and there is extensive use of chrome surrounds for the gauges, vent rings, vent knobs and audio switches. The sport-oriented three-spoke steering wheel features a unique “parallel” pattern steering wheel stitching (versus the traditional baseball-style stitching) for enhanced grip on Maxima Sport and Premium Packages. A unique shiny gray stitch color is included with the Sport Package.

The driver’s seat includes an available manual thigh extension for long distance driving and additional padding in the side bolsters for good lateral support during sporty driving. The seat is also available with heating and cooling functions and premium leather-appointed surfaces with special stitching. Also available are power lower lumbar and memory functions. Maxima is available with two different rear seat layouts – a 60/40 fold-down rear seat with access to the trunk, and a fixed rear seat with center armrest pass-through for carrying long items such as skis or other sporting equipment (Sport Package and Premium Package). Two interior colors are offered: Café Latté and Charcoal.

Comfort and convenience features include a standard moonroof, 8-way power drivers seat and 4-way power adjustable front passenger seat, dual-zone automatic temperature control, cruise control with illuminated steering wheel mounted controls, Nissan Intelligent Key® with Push Button Ignition, power windows and door locks, AM/FM/CD6/MP3 audio system with eight speakers, Bluetooth® Hands-Free Phone System and available USB connectivity.

True Sports Sedan Performance
In creating driving performance worthy of Nissan’s flagship, the Maxima body and chassis engineering teams worked together to create a secure feeling, virtually no torque steer during acceleration and a level of nimbleness that ultimately makes a car fun to drive. Utilizing Nissan’s advanced “D platform” as its foundation, Maxima features a standard 3.5-liter VQ-series V6 engine rated at 290 horsepower and 261 lb-ft of torque.

The engine includes a modular engine design with microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, molybdenum coated lightweight pistons, a resin intake collector, digital knock control, six individual coils (one per spark plug) and a cross-flow coolant pattern. Also utilized are a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), a variable induction system, a silent timing chain and electronically controlled throttle. Maxima also utilizes a six-point engine mounting system, which includes upper and lower torque rods, high rigidity front and rear aluminum brackets and front and rear switchable control mounts to improve NVH performance under high engine torque conditions.

All 2012 Maximas come equipped with a refined Xtronic CVT® with manual mode, tuned specifically for Maxima’s sporty driving character. For drivers seeking more aggressive shift operation, “Ds mode” (drive sport) electronic control logic programming provides increased acceleration feel with higher engine revolutions, automatic engine braking and maintaining engine speed during cornering. Available steering column-mounted paddle shifters allow for manual transmission-like shift changes while the driver’s hands remain on the wheel.

Maxima’s suspension is designed to be both stimulating and relaxing, combining responsive handling with a comfortable ride. The subframe-mounted strut/coil spring front suspension makes extensive use of lightweight aluminum parts. An X-type upper cowl structure helps provide front body rigidity for suspension mounting. Maxima’s multi-link independent rear suspension design, also subframe-mounted, offers outstanding handling by minimizing camber change during cornering. The rear shock absorbers and springs are separated and the shocks are in line with the center of the rear wheels, providing excellent damping and minimal harshness. Front and rear stabilizer bars are standard.

Braking is provided by standard 4-wheel vented disc brakes with a 4-channel, 4-sensor, 4-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). Maxima also features a Twin Orifice Power Steering (TOPS) vehicle-speed-sensitive power rack-and-pinion steering system with the quickest steering ratio of any Nissan sedan (15.2:1) to help provide its sporty steering feel. A strut tower brace contributes to Maxima’s steering precision and rigidity.

Maxima offers standard 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and V-rated P245/45R18 all-season tires, with new Dark Hyper Silver aluminum-alloy wheels on the Limited Edition Package.

The Maxima 3.5 SV model with Sport Package features 19-inch Light Hyper Silver aluminum-alloy wheels with P245/40R19 all-season or summer performance tires.

Standard Safety Features, High Residual Value
Maxima comes equipped with standard Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual-stage front supplemental air bags, seat belt sensors and an occupant classification sensor. Front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags and roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags for front and rear outboard occupant head protection are also standard, along with front-seat Active Head Restraints, 3-point rear seat belts for all seating positions, front seat belts with pretensioners, load limiters and adjustable upper anchors, emergency inside trunk release, Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones, LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Maxima also features standard Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control System (TCS).

Maxima has also received the ALG Residual Value Awards for Best Fullsize Car for three years in row (2009, 2010 and 2011). The ALG Residual Value Awards recognize the vehicle in each industry segment that is predicted to retain the highest percentage of original price after a conventional three-year period.

Two Well-Equipped Models, Plus Special Equipment Packages

The 2012 Maxima is offered in two well-equipped models. In addition to the long list of standard features found on every Maxima 3.5 S model, Maxima 3.5 SV adds leather-appointed sport seats, Bose® premium audio system with nine speakers (including two subwoofers and a center channel speaker), XM® Satellite Radio (XM® subscription required, sold separately), HomeLink® Universal Transceiver, fog lights and outside mirrors with turn signal indicators.

A number of packages are also offered, including the new Limited Edition Package, which offers smoked appearance headlights, HID xenon headlights, compass in rearview mirror, 18-inch aluminum-alloy Dark Hyper Silver wheels, rear spoiler, dark sport appearance front grille, fog lights, outside mirrors with turn signals, metallic trim treatment.

The Sport Package’s equipment includes a sport-tuned suspension, 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, rear spoiler, High Intensity Discharge (HID) Xenon headlights, heated outside mirrors with reverse tilt-down feature, automatic entry/exit system with two-driver memory, heated front seats and steering wheel, paddle shifters, metallic finish trim, premium leather-appointed seats, plus smoked headlight covers and dark chrome grille.

Pine Belt Nissan Versa: At A Glance

Small on the outside, big on the inside. Smart technology with next-generation efficiency. A $10,990 starting M.S.R.P. New dual injector system and sub-planetary CVT design. Combined city/highway fuel economy of 33 miles per gallon. New global “V” (for Versatile) platform. Refined styling, high quality interior.

There are myriad ways the all-new 2012 Nissan Versa Sedan breaks new ground for entry-level compact sedans. And many ways to sum them all up. But perhaps a simple statement is best: Innovation Within Reach.

“Compact cars are getting a lot of attention lately due to rising fuel costs and concerns about the environment. Yet many buyers are disappointed in what they find – vehicles rife with
compromise,” says Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. “This new Versa Sedan, a ‘clean sheet’ ground-up design, takes small cars in a new direction – proving that you don’t have to sacrifice style for affordability, interior roominess for a smaller footprint, or drivability for high mpg.”
Small When You Need It, Big Where You Want It
Knowing that entry-level vehicles are used as “workhorses” – for commuting on weekdays, errand running on weekends and transporting family and friends all week long – the designers of the new Versa Sedan sought to combine five-passenger practicality with a high degree of comfort and refinement. It also offers an unexpected level of available entertainment and connectivity features, such as Bluetooth®, navigation system with 5-inch touch-screen display, Satellite Radio and an iPod®/USB interface.

“We see buyers in this segment as people who are always busy, even while relaxing,” explains Castignetti. “With the amount of time they typically spend in their vehicles, we want to make sure they feel good about their purchase long after the new car smell has worn off. So we invested in areas that they see and touch most – like available Fine Vision instrumentation, quality fabrics, bright trim work and comfortable seating for front and rear seat passengers.”

The new Versa Sedan’s interior volume of 90.0 cubic feet and trunk volume of 14.8 cubic feet (104.8 cubic feet total) are intended to not only look great on a specifications sheet – the passenger and cargo spaces have been configured for real-world use. Versa Sedan has, for example, more rear legroom than some mid-size sedans – trumping even luxury cars such as the Lexus LS460, BMW 5-series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. And the trunk design focuses on useable space, taking into consideration everything from the size of the hinges to the shape of the sidewalls. A 60/40-split fold-down rear seat is offered on SL models for even greater versatility.

Other available interior features include trip computer, power windows with driver’s one-touch down, speed-sensing auto door locks, remote trunk release lever and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. Two interior colors are available, Sandstone and Charcoal.

“Since introduction of the original, Versa has been a segment leader in sales and share – something we expect to continue with this new generation design,” said Castignetti. “Its look, quality feel, performance and standard equipment present an exceptionally high standard for a vehicle with a $10,990 starting M.S.R.P.”

The Versa Sedan’s new exterior design is also a departure from most current compact sedans, offering a refreshing design character that is both sophisticated and highly aerodynamic. The designers gave the exterior shape a strong sense of volume, with a wide shoulder width and a smooth silhouette. In front, Versa Sedan features Nissan’s new signature sedan grille design and jewel-like headlights. The front end blends smoothly into the cabin, which offers flowing curves, while design elements such as the shape of the trunklid help give the new Versa Sedan excellent aerodynamics, including a low coefficient of drag of just 0.31.

In addition, to help ensure superb functionality, fresh ideas were addressed in the initial stage between the designers and the engineering team. For example, the indented line in the middle of the Versa Sedan’s sweeping roofline is not just a design feature, but a functional innovation that helps reduce the amplitude of the roof panel vibrations in order to create a quieter cabin interior without the use of reinforcement devices called “mass bumpers.”

“Design and engineering came together in an extraordinary collaboration to create a level of sophistication that you not only see but also feel,” adds Castignetti. “It helps provide a sense of ‘modern value’ that goes far beyond the mere purchase price, much like you expect from larger, more expensive sedans.”

Other exterior features include a fixed roof antenna, body-color front and rear fascias and available chrome-accented grille, blacked-out B-pillar, chrome door handles and front fog lights.

The 2012 Versa Sedan is offered in eight exterior colors, including Metallic Blue, Blue Onyx, Super Black, Brilliant Silver, Magnetic Gray, Red Brick, Fresh Powder and Titanium – which has previously been reserved for the Nissan GT-R among Nissan models.

Next-Generation Efficiency and an All-New V Platform
One of the biggest challenges in designing a compact sedan, of course, is where to put everything – people, cargo, engine, transmission and other mechanical components. Often the solution is to gather a fraction of an inch here, a fraction there and hope they add up to a usable benefit. For the new Versa Sedan, the approach was a little more radical – create a totally new global platform and drivetrain, reducing the size of engine and transmission, reducing the number of component parts and reducing platform weight.

“It’s unusual to develop a totally new platform for a vehicle in only its second generation, yet when driven by a culture of innovation, such investments are easy to make,” explains Castignetti.

The 2012 Versa Sedan’s all-new front-wheel drive global “V” platform, designated “V” for Versatile, utilizes nearly 20 percent fewer platform components and weighs around 150 pounds less than the previous “B” platform. While retaining the same 102.4-inch wheelbase and 66.7-inch width as the previous generation Versa Sedan, the new model is 1.2 inches lower in height (59.6 inches) and 0.6 inches shorter in overall length (175.4 inches). The biggest dimensional gain, however, is in the visible gain in trunk length – provided by a more compact engine/transmission design that allows for a 2.7-inch increase in rear overhang (the distance from the center of the rear tire to the rear bumper).

“The new Versa Sedan proves that when it comes to packaging and aerodynamic efficiency, not all small sedans are created equal,” says Castignetti. “The same can be said of the engine, which beautifully balances excellent environmental performance, responsive power and smooth, quiet operation.”

The second-generation 1.6-liter HR16DE 4-cylinder engine includes a range of cutting-edge technologies, making it one of the most advanced powerplants in class. For example, while the average engine uses only one injector per cylinder to inject fuel, the new Versa Sedan engine is equipped with two streamlined injectors mounted near the inlet valve for each cylinder. This dual injector system allows a wider injection of fuel, with the smaller nozzles delivering a finer spray (approximately 57 percent finer than the previous generation single injector design’s particle size) to help achieve stable combustion.

The new compact, lighter weight engine also utilizes a twin Continuously Variable Timing Control (CVTC) system mounted on both intake and exhaust ports (versus conventional CVTC systems which are mounted only on the intake port), similar to the system used on the flagship Nissan Maxima. Using a CVTC on the outlet port increases thermal efficiency, decreases inhalation resistance and offers an approximate four percent improvement in fuel efficiency. Other enhancements include the addition of a piston oiling jet, tuning of the piston top shape and expansion of the exhaust manifold diameter.

“To incorporate the new dual injector system into an entry-level vehicle is very fitting of Nissan’s corporate philosophy of ‘innovation for all’ – bring advanced technology to high volume segments rather than saving them only for high-end machines,” says Castignetti. “The new dual injector system also uses around half the amount of rare metals in the catalyzer by reducing the amount of unburned fuel and hydrocarbon emissions.”

The new 1.6-liter engine is rated at 109 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm and 107 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpm.

The Versa Sedan is available with a 5-speed manual transmission (1.6 S model only) and with a next-generation Xtronic CVT™ transmission. The CVT allows continuous change of the transmission gear ratio by connecting the two pulleys with a metallic belt and changing their diameter by using hydraulic pressure. The new CVT design adds an auxiliary gearbox using planetary gearing, helping improve efficiency.

The CVT also features a transmission ratio of 7.3:1, which is broader than those of conventional CVTs and even typical 7-speed automatic transmissions. Friction is reduced by about 30 percent, weight by about 13 percent and overall size by about 10 percent versus the previous Versa Sedan CVT design.

Versa also offers P185/65R15 all-season tires with available 15-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.

“The result of all these enhancements and advances is that the new Versa Sedan engine burns cleaner and uses less fuel, which combined with the improved CVT performance and better aerodynamics helps improve fuel economy by about five miles per gallon versus the 2011 Versa Sedan,” says Castignetti. “Better mileage means fewer stops at the pump – and more ‘room in the wallet’ for other activities.”

Fuel economy for the 2012 Versa Sedan is estimated at 30 mpg City, 38 mpg Highway and 33 mpg Combined with the CVT transmission (27/36/30 mpg with the 5-speed manual transmission).

All 2012 Versa Sedans are equipped with an independent MacPherson strut front suspension and torsion beam rear suspension, with front and rear stabilizer bars. Other standard equipment includes Electric Power Steering and power-assisted front disc/rear drum brakes. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) is also standard on all Versa Sedan models.

In addition, the new Versa will be the first Nissan model in the United States branded with the PUREDRIVE™ designation. PUREDRIVE will be used on models utilizing Nissan’s most advanced technologies to promote eco-friendly driving and lower CO2 emissions*.

Standard safety features found on every 2012 Versa Sedan include the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) (includes dual-stage front supplemental air bags and front seat side-impact supplemental air bags for chest protection), seat-mounted driver and front passenger side-impact supplemental air bags, and roof-mounted curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear outboard occupant head protection.

Additional safety features include standard LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system, child safety rear door locks, child seat upper tether anchors and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and Traction Control System (TCS).

“This all-new Versa Sedan is a total value proposition,” concludes Castignetti. “The Big Small Car is bringing Innovation Within Reach to an eagerly awaiting audience.”
